Herbert Spencer - Sociologist

Herbert Spencer (1820-1903) compared society with a living organism. He said that, different components of society are interdependent as like parts of a living organism. All the parts of society work together to result in a proper function of society. The change in one part affects other parts. In case, any part malfunctions, other parts must adjust to the crisis and contribute to preserve the society.

The components of society are individuals, and social institutions i.e., family, education, religion, politics, media etc.

Spencer believed that if government leaves society alone, it will correct all its defects and problems. According to Spencer, society runs through the phenomenon of "survival of the fittest." Nature has selected rich and powerful to rule and enjoy the power over weak and poor who are doomed by nature.
