Sociologists agree that human society also goes through an evolution phase like human beings went through an evolutionary process as proposed by Charles Darwin.
Social change means that evolution in the social values and social pattern of society through change in social institutions, culture, behavior and interactions over time. While socio-cultural change is the evolution in the culture (habits, lifestyle, etc.) of a society due to innovations or contact with other cultures. Moreover, socio-structural change is the change in the pattern of the social institutions.
A shift in society from agricultural to industrial and then to modern and postmodern is a significant social change. When society changed from the agriculture phase to industrial phase, it changed not only the working style but economics, interactions, behavior and living style. Industrial society gave rise to modernism due to advancement in science and technology. Progress in the field of science and especially Information Technology brought post-modern social change. Use of social media, online shopping, banking through mobile apps have changed social behavior a lot. Social media has decreased socialism.
There are three basic ideas about social change:
Rise and fall over time
Religious idea; fall from a higher stage due to dis-obedience behavior.
Continuous progress
Ibn-e-Khaldun: A nation with higher Asabiyyah (Social Solidarity) takes the place of a nation having lower Asabiyyah.
Auguste Comte: Social evolution occurred in three stages; Theological, metaphysical and positivism.
Herbert Spencer: Society works like the human body in which every social institution has an impact on people.”
Karl Marx: Class struggle is behind social evolution."
Max Weber: Ethical values give rise to social change."
Note: Social change is good but in some cases it has bad impacts too.
