Social Values, Social Control & Deviant Behavior

There are some social values in every society, which vary from society to society and all the members are bound to follow. To respect and to avoid violation of these values there are some limits and rules which are called social control mechanisms. If an individual does not respect these social values, his/her behavior is said to be deviant.

1st Example: In a society like the UK, U.S.A, France, Germany or China, being an atheist is not an issue, but in a country like Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Iran or Bangladesh it is a deviant behavior.

2nd Example: In an area like Waziristan or a country like Afghanistan, girls do not go to school, and if a family sends their daughter to school to get educated, they are criticized and this act is said to be a deviant.

From above mentioned examples, it has been clear that deviant behavior gets changed with the changing society.

There are multiple ways of social control; formal and informal. But, in contemporary times, it has been observed that these mechanisms have been failed or ineffective. There are some factors behind the ineffectiveness of these mechanisms:

  • Globalization

  • Social media

  • Secular education

  • Nuclear family system

In all above-mentioned factors, globalization is the biggest reason behind the ineffectiveness of social control. A person living in a country like Saudi Arabia is connected to the world through social media or through other mediums in the age of globalization and has deep information and knowledge about the trends, fashion and ideas in a country like France. When he practices or expresses the same beliefs or ideas as those of France in his native country, we would face criticism and in some cases like expression of atheist belief, the consequences could be serious.

Hence, we should educate our people to understand this globalization and learn to live in this diverse society, which is going to be more and more diverse in the coming days.

Moreover, social control on deviance behaviors i.e. deceiving, snatching, harassing is perceived as deviance all over the world. To control this behavior, already installed formal/informal mechanisms should be upgraded. In Pakistan, now there are rules like Women Protection Act, Child Protection Act and Federal Investigation Agency to probe these cases seriously. There should be more awareness at the local level, especially from religious places. In educational institutes, a special lecture should be delivered to control this deviance behavior. In our educational system, there is no subject on social values, etiquettes. There is a high need of time to add a subject in educational institutes at all levels to train our citizens according to the demands of the society and international standards to make our nation peaceful and prosperous.
